Starting a Saltwater Aquarium
The saltwater aquarium is one of the most beautiful yet complicated choices for aquarium hobbyists. Since your goal is to replicate the water in the ocean, this can be a daunting tasks for the beginner. It is also not the cheapest choices for an aquarium setup in your home.
Saltwater tank maintenance takes much more than just changing the water once in a while. If you happen to live next to the ocean, this part is obviously much easier to deal with. But what happens if you live in Arizona for example. Well, it means you must learn how to simulate seawater.
This can be done with any number of commercially available mixes that must be added to your tank water. Saltwater tanks usually start at about the 40 gallon side, so they are rather large. Make sure that you have the proper space in your house to accommodate the tank. A larger tank makes it easier to create that natural ocean ecosystem. In addition to this you will need chemicals for the salty components, a filter system, artificial lighting and an aquarium heater.
Saltwater fish must be cared for very carefully or they will not thrive. Apart from fish food, aquarium lighting and heating must be regulated constantly. This means a much larger level of commitment of maintenance on your part if you decide to go the saltwater aquarium route.
All of this work and expense does have it's final advantage. The type of fish and aquatic life that you can have in your home. Fish from the ocean can be much larger and colorful than their freshwater counterparts. Take advantage of this, and as always, check with your local pet shop pros for tips and help setting up your new aquarium.
